Powder Coating vs. Paint for Metal Gates

Powder Coating vs. Paint for Metal Gates
The finish on your gate decides how long it looks good and how much maintenance it needs. Here is how powder coating and paint compare for metal gates.
What Is Powder Coating
Powder coating is a dry powder applied electrostatically and then baked onto the metal. The heat cures it into a hard, uniform shell that bonds to the surface. It is the standard finish for gates built for outdoor use.
What Is Paint
Paint is a liquid applied by brush, roller, or spray. It dries by solvent evaporation. Paint is easier to touch up and cheaper up front, but it is thinner and less bonded than powder coat, so it chips and fades sooner.
Durability
Powder coat is harder and more chip resistant than paint. It holds up to UV, rain, and temperature swings better, which matters in Texas. A powder coated gate can go years without needing attention; a painted gate usually needs repainting sooner.
Appearance
Powder coat gives a smooth, even finish without brush marks or drips. It comes in a wide range of colors and textures, including hammered and wrinkle finishes. Paint offers more flexibility for custom on site touch ups but is harder to apply evenly.
Cost
Powder coat costs more up front because it needs a booth and a bake. Over the life of the gate, the lower maintenance usually makes it the better value.
When Paint Makes Sense
Paint makes sense for a quick primer coat on a working ranch gate that will get scratched anyway, or for a field touch up. For a finished gate meant to look good for years, powder coat is the better choice.
