Steel vs. Aluminum vs. Wrought Iron Gates in the Texas Climate

Steel vs. Aluminum vs. Wrought Iron in Texas
The Texas climate is hard on metal: intense sun, high humidity near the coast, and thunderstorms. Here is how the three common gate metals compare.
Steel
Steel is strong, cost effective, and easy to weld into any shape. It is the default choice for most driveway, sliding, and ranch gates. The trade off is corrosion: steel rusts if the finish is damaged. A good powder coat and prompt touch ups keep steel gates in shape for years.
Aluminum
Aluminum does not rust, which makes it attractive near the coast or in humid areas. It is lighter than steel, so it is easier to ship and easier on operators. The trade off is strength: aluminum is softer and less suited to wide or high security gates. Welding aluminum is more specialized.
Wrought Iron
True wrought iron is largely a historic material now; most iron look gates today are mild steel formed to look like wrought iron. The classic look suits historic and traditional homes. It needs regular paint or powder coat to prevent rust, more than steel.
How They Handle Texas Weather
- Sun: all three hold up with a good finish. Powder coat resists UV better than paint.
- Humidity and coast: aluminum resists rust best; steel and iron need intact finishes.
- Wind and storms: steel is strongest for wide gates that take wind load.
Which to Choose
For most Texas driveways and ranches, steel gates with a powder coat finish are the best balance of strength, cost, and durability. Choose aluminum for coastal or humid sites where rust is the main concern. Choose an iron look for traditional style, with the understanding it needs more finish care.
